New regulations for F-1 students were released by the INS on Wednesday
December 11, 2002. We in the IES office are reviewing these regulations
and will be issuing a summary of what has changed as soon as possible.
Included in these regulations are new changes on Curricular Practical
Training (CPT) which are important enough to pass on immediately.
Effective January 1, 2003, the regulations define CPT as follows:
“Curricular practical training is defined to be alternative work/study,
internship, cooperative education or any other type of required
internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through
cooperative agreements with the school.
This means that if the internship is not required for graduation in
your program, you will not be eligible for this benefit, and will need
to use Optional Practical Training for your internship. To the best of
our knowledge, the only graduate program that requires an internship is
psychology.
Under the old regulations, which are in effect until December 31, 2002,
CPT requires academic credit that is unique to the work experience. For
undergraduates that would generally be specific internship credit. For
graduate students, this usually takes the form of independent study
authorized by the student’s academic advisor.
