Finding the Status of Applications and Cases Filed or Processed at a Service Center

Calling: If your application is pending for longer than the processing time projected on any receipt, and you have not recently received any type of notice or update from INS, you can call the Service Center. If you have a receipt, please have it with you when you call because you can receive an automated update on the status of your application using your receipt number. The automated system also provides information about Service Center mailing addresses, hours, service areas, and forms. Please note that the Texas Service Center prefers that you fax your case inquiry.

The customer service telephone numbers of the INS Service Centers are:

California Service Center 949-831-8427
Nebraska Service Center 402-323-7830
Texas Service Center 214-381-1423
Vermont Service Center 802-527-4913
Information about the Service Centers, and about each office's address, hours and local procedures can be found under INS Field Offices.

Writing: While calling can be more convenient, you may instead choose to request an update by writing the Service Center. Please note that the Texas Service Center prefers that customers fax their inquiries. Specific information about the centers can be found under INS Field Offices.

If you write, please provide the following in your letter:

Your current name and address, and, if different, your name as it appears on your application;
Any A-number, which is an 8 or 9 digit number following the letter "A", assigned to you or to your application
Your date of birth;
The date and place where your application was filed;
Any receipt number from any receipt notice issued by INS for your application;
A copy of the most recent notice sent to you by INS on your case, if you have received one; and
The date and office where you were fingerprinted and where you were interviewed, if this has been done.

Sign your request, or, if you are preparing the request for the applicant, have him or her sign the request. Please mark your envelope: ATTN: Status Inquiry. With the exception of the Texas Service Center (please see its web site for specific information on faxing your inquiry), please send your inquiry to the address listed in the "About Us" section of the INS Field Office pages.
